Our Roadmap

Phase 1: Pilots and Co-design (May, June & July 2025)

The initiative will begin with four pilot eventshosted in partnership with local nurseries and schools. Framed as celebrations of Earth’s Birthday, these events build upon the spirit of Earth Day and introduce children to ecological themes through interactive, playful sessions. Activities will include circle time with an inflatable planet, scavenger hunts, communal picnics, and storytelling. These sessions aim to explore children’s existing relationships with nature, identify their preferences and challenges with outdoor spaces, and gather insights through playful interviews and photography.

Other core activities for this phase:

Clothing Drive: Collect pre-loved coats and wellies to ensure all children can take part comfortably where they don’t have access to appropriate clothes.

Data Collection: Utilise playful interviews and photography to gather insights into children’s preferences and challenges in the garden space.

Ethical Considerations: Obtain ethical approval from the Faculty Ethics Committee.

Phase 2: PGP Showcase (June/July/August 2025)

In June, the initiative will host three key events to consolidate and expand community engagement.

  • We will host a partner showcase that will engage local organisations to co-design future projects and establish the Hull PGP Co-Design Council.
  • A targeted session for PVI managers (private, voluntary, and independent) of childcare settings will showcase the gardens, promoting outdoor play and introducing professional development opportunities. Additionally, a newsletter will be launched to keep stakeholders informed and engaged.
  • As part of this month, we will launch our PGP Website.

Phase 3: Growing the Project (September 2025 onwards)

Throughout the summer, the project will collaborate with childminders, summer school providers, and private nurseries to continue offering enriching sessions at Thwaite Botanic Gardens. These activities will build on the insights from previous phases and feedback from the Co-Design Council, ensuring the initiative remains responsive and adaptable.

This summer, we will host a community launch event, featuring a bake sale for fundraising, will introduce PGP’s vision and achievements to date. We hope to get a local food truck to support catering for the event, and arrange some activities for children.

Phase 4: Autumnal Fest (September–November 2025)

Autumn will see the integration of PGP activities within local schools’ curricula. Schools will lead sessions at Thwaite Botanic Gardens, supported by the initiative with resources and lesson planning assistance. Concurrently, CPD workshops will empower educators to confidently facilitate outdoor learning. Seasonal events during this period will maintain momentum and celebrate collective progress.
